Electronic commerce, also known as eCommerce, consists of the buying and selling of products or services via electronic systems such as the Internet.
Simply put, eCommerce is buying and selling through a website. The Internet has been the great equalizer since it exploded onto the scene in the 1990s. Before the Internet became commonplace, small businesses struggled to reach customers outside of a local geographic area. The Internet has changed that. Someone with a product or service to sell now has a world wide reach and can do business along side large corporations. With the web, you don't even need a traditional "brick and mortar" store front to make a go of it. To be sure many brick and mortar businesses have benefited from having their own eCommerce website, but having a store front is no longer a barrier to entry that an entrepreneur has to be able to overcome financially. |
