Do I need a web designer or a web developer?
Whats the difference between a web designer and a web developer? Which one do I need to get my web site up and running?

The two terms are frequently used interchangeably. Strictly speaking, a web designer focuses more on the "front end" or appearance of the website; how the graphics appear, the look and feel of the website, etc. A web developer works more with the "back end" of the website; the stuff "under the hood" that makes it all work.

Developers are able to write the code that will make a web site more than just a static, information only set of pages. When interactive or database driven content is what you need, then a web developer will be required. For example, suppose you want to turn your website into an online store to sell your products. You'll need a way to display the products, a shopping cart system and a check out process. These are functions that will call for a web developer.

On the other hand, if you business doesn't need an elaborate set of custom web applications, then a web designer will do nicely. A well designed and maintained web site with information about your products and services can drive customers to your business as surely as a complex eCommerce site can.
